Australia's Asciano to provide intermodal services for freight forwarder

Australian transportation firm Asciano recently signed a long-term contract with freight forwarding company Toll Holdings regarding intermodal haulage in Australia.

Under terms of the contract — which is expected to generate revenue up to $1 billion during the next five years — Asciano’s Pacific National Intermodal Division will provide transportation services to Toll Holdings for interstate container and rail-car moves. In addition, the division will grant Toll Holdings a lease on land near the Perth Freight Terminal to develop a freight forwarding facility adjacent to the terminal.

The pact includes options that could extend the deal up to 10 years.

“Locating the facility at the rail terminal will introduce greater efficiencies, reduce costs associated with the pick up and delivery of freight at the terminal, [and] reduce truck movements and traffic congestion in the Kewdale vicinity,” said Asciano Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mark Rowsthorn in a prepared statement. “The benefits of co-locating rail and freight forwarding facilities are becoming increasingly important and may become a model for the development of intermodal freight in Australia.”
