The American Society of Civil Engineers recently presented its 2004 Outstanding Civil Engineering Transportation Project award in the state of California to Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and HNTB Corp. for the BART extension to San Francisco International Airport.

A Federal Transit Administration-sponsored Turnkey Demonstration Design-Build Project, the extension was BART’s first-ever design-build project.

HNTB served as the engineer and prime consultant for three of the four design/build contracts for the $705 million project, which was completed in June 2003.

The engineering firm designed more than six miles of underground subway, one mile of at-grade track, and one mile of aerial bridge structures. HNTB also was responsible for the structure, civil, trackwork, systems, grading and utilities design, as well as the design of ventilation structures, traction power substations and train control facilities.
