Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
On Tuesday, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), Union City and AC Transit officials broke ground on the $100 million Union City Intermodal Station.
The project calls for transforming the Union City BART station into a multi-modal transit hub that will provide connections to BART and Capitol Corridor trains, as well as buses. Altamont Commuter Express, Dumbarton Rail and high-speed trains also might use the facility in the future.
The station will be powered by solar-generated electricity through solar cells located on the canopy of a 16-bay bus facility. BART expects the cells to produce about $23,000 worth of electricity annually.
The station plan also calls for developing 80 acres of industrial space surrounding the facility into a transit village that will include up to 1,800 new residential units, 100,000 square feet of retail space and 1 million square feet of office space. The village is expected to be complete in 2015.
