Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has opened an electric vehicle charging site at its new Warm Springs/South Fremont Station.The station now is home to 22 charging stations that can accommodate up to 42 electric vehicles. The site is part of a pilot program designed to measure rider demand for electronic vehicle charging and to help BART develop a systemwide approach to the technology. In the San Francisco Bay area and California broadly, there's been a surge in electric vehicle purchases, BART officials said in a press release.Fremont, Calif., alone is home to more than 5,000 electric vehicles. Funded in part with a grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the charging stations are the only ones in the entire BART system.Riders who wish to charge their vehicles at the Warm Springs Station will pay a daily $6 parking fee.
