The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority Board recently contracted Bay Area Rapid Transit to manage Capitol Corridor intercity rail service another five years.

BART was chosen as the corridor’s managing agency in 1999. In 2002, the board extended the agency’s contract another three years. Now, BART’s 11-member full-time corridor staff will manage the line through 2010. Since BART began managing the corridor, service has increased 200 percent; ridership, 152 percent; revenue, 110 percent and fare box recovery, 30 percent, according to a prepared statement.

The 170-mile Capitol Corridor serves Placer, Sacramento, Yolo, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties. In 1991, the California Department of Transportation established the locally managed Amtrak line, which currently ranks as the third-busiest Amtrak-operated route in the country.
