Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) officials recently proposed a $557.3 million fiscal-year 2007 budget that would include funds to preserve service and operate longer trains.
Although the budget proposes a $4.7 million deficit, the shortfall is much lower than the $50 million to $60 million deficits BART has dealt with during the past five years, according to a prepared statement.
BART officials expect to present the board with a final budget in June. The new fiscal year begins July 1.
