Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
After five years of belt tightening to eliminate budget deficits, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is projecting a small surplus in its fiscal-year 2008 budget. Last week, the agency proposed a $624.8 million budget that anticipates additional revenue $8.9 million.
The agency proposes to use the additional funds to improve station and parking lot lighting, update its Web site, hire paramedics at key stations during commute hours, and add 24 car and station cleaners.
The board expects to adopt the budget at its June 14 meeting. BART’s next fiscal year begins July 1.
