BLE, Class Is agree to prohibit workers from operating remote controls in locomotive cabs

On Oct. 15, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Class Is reached an agreement restricting workers from operating remote controls when inside locomotive cabs, at least until an arbitrator resolves the dispute between BLE, United Transportation Union and the railroads regarding remote-control jurisdiction.

BLE officials say they received numerous reports from members that some workers were operating locomotives with remote controls from inside cabs, according to a prepared statement.

The union recently filed a motion with a U.S. district court seeking to clarify that a federal injunction issued in January did not cover such situations.

On Oct. 16, a federal judge ordered that the BLE/Class I agreement will be enforceable in court and the injunction will prohibit workers from operating remote controls inside cabs, except during an emergency.
