BLE-represented workers in northern Quebec ratify CN contract

Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers-represented workers in Canadian National Railway Co.'s Northern Quebec Territory (NQT) recently ratified a five-year agreement preserving flexible work practices and hourly pay rates.
The contract also increases wages and benefits for the 65 NQT workers retroactive to May 1, 2000.
"The NQT was established in 1995 with flexible work rules and hourly pay for train and engine personnel that are similar to those employed by low-cost short-line railways," said Keith Heller, senior vice president of CN’s Eastern Canada Division, in a prepared statement. "The new approach has worked — the NQT is now a competitive component of CN's network and an important generator of traffic for the railway."
CN now has completed all NQT negotiations with unions representing more than 250 employees.
