On Feb. 28, Utah Railway Co.'s train-service employees voted 17-15 in favor of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers' representation over current representative United Transportation Union, according to National Mediation Board-certified election results. BLE currently represents the 276-mile short line's locomotive engineers.

Acquired by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. in August 2002, Utah Railway interchanges with Burlington Northern Sante Fe and Union Pacific Railroad, and moves more than 90,000 carloads annually.

Meanwhile, BLE-represented The Indiana & Ohio Railway Co. (I&O) workers recently ratified their first-ever collective bargaining agreement with railroad owner RailAmerica Inc.

The contract provides the 492-mile short line's workers higher wages, profit sharing and benefits, and establishes work rules and a formal grievance process.

"Our I&O members are no longer 'at will' employees. They now have the protections provided by a Class I discipline rule," said BLE International Vice President Merle Geiger in a prepared statement.
