At Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes annual convention in Las Vegas, members July 9 elected Mac Fleming as president for a fourth term and Freddie Simpson as secretary-treasurer succeeding William LaRue, who plans to retire Aug. 31 having served BMWE 28 years, according to a statement prepared July 11.

Fleming and Simpson will begin four-year terms Sept. 1.

"We all look forward to working with the other rail unions to advance our common agenda," said Fleming.

Union members also elected Ken Deptuck and Ronald Liberty as Canadian vice presidents; Henry Wise Jr., northeast region vice president; Leon Fenhaus, northwest region vice president; J. R. "Randy" Cook, southeast region vice president; Richard Spears, southwest region vice president; and Rick Wehrli, western region vice president.

Meanwhile, BMWE delegates also voted to eliminate actions to recall Fleming and LaRue. Some union members sought to oust the officers because of merger dealings and union-dues issues.

"As there is no longer any basis in the constitution and bylaws to remove officers by recall, and as the change is effective immediately, the pending recalls seeking removal of Mac Fleming and W. E. LaRue are cancelled," said BMWE officials in a July 15 letter to members.
