BNSF, CSXI team up to speed Southern California-to-Atlanta intermodal service

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Aug. 21 continued down the alliance path, forming a haulage agreement with CSX Intermodal to begin a premium intermodal trailer service between Los Angeles and San Bernardino, Calif., and Atlanta.
The service — which starts Aug. 22 — would be available Wednesday through Sunday in both directions. The seamless intermodal moves would enable BNSF to reduce its transit time about 12 hours between Atlanta and Southern California.
"BNSF is giving its customers improved speed and reliability into two large parcel and less-than-truckload transcontinental markets — Southern California and the Southeast via Atlanta," said John Lucas, BNSF assistant vice president, intermodal direct marketing, in a prepared statement.
BNSF now offers seamless intermodal service between Southern California and the eastern U.S., and eastern Canada.
The haulage agreement follows BNSF's and CSXI's June pact to expand BNSF's Ice Cold Express service to the East Coast. The railroads provide twice-weekly temperature-controlled service between San Bernardino and Little Ferry, N.J. — accessing the New York and New Jersey markets.
