Three Class Is have landed on two magazines' recent "best of" lists. Norfolk Southern Corp. and Union Pacific Railroad made BusinessWeek's annual top 50 "Best Places to Launch a Career," and BNSF Railway Co. has been named one of the 500 most innovative business technology users by InformationWeek.

BusinessWeek's list is based on a survey of U.S. employers, college career services directors and about 50,000 college undergraduates. NS moved up on the list this year to No. 20, primarily because of "our focus on safety and service, our light impact on the environment and our efforts to build an inclusive workplace," said Cindy Earhart, vice president of human resources, in a prepared statement.

UP landed at No. 39 on the list because of the opportunities and rewards it provides employees.

Meanwhile, BNSF made InformationWeek's list by harnessing technology to improve efficiency, boost productivity, increase revenue and establish a competitive advantage, the Class I said.

The railroad updated its Transportation Support System, which is designed to help monitor more than 6,000 locomotives and 220,000 freight cars, and keep track of the work of 40,000 employees. Now called TSS Xpress, the system has reduced more than 3,400 previous commands to fewer than 100 new menu items.
