A magazine for corporate responsibility officers counts three of the U.S. Class Is among the nation's top 100 companies when it comes to corporate responsibility.

CRO magazine recently named Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., Norfolk Southern Corp. and Union Pacific Corp. to its annual list. The railroads scored high marks in the eight categories used to rate the top corporations: climate change, employee relations, environment, financial, governance, human rights, lobbying and philanthropy. The magazine selected eligible companies from the Russell 1000 index.

UP attained one of the highest scores in the climate change category, the magazine said.

“Our score ... is a testament to the creativity, innovation and commitment of our employees who are serious about their role as environmental stewards," said UP Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Young in a prepared statement.

At NS, senior executives rely on an environmental policy council and a recently named — and first-ever — corporate sustainability officer to work together on sustainability and environmental issues.

Making the magzine's list is "another clear indication that the [rail] industry stands ready to play an even greater role in helping to address our nation's growing infrastructure and environmental challenges," said NS Chairman, President and CEO Wick Moorman.

Meanwhile, BNSF strives for continuous improvement in environmental stewardship, safety, U.S. and global economic prosperity, and community support, said Chairman, President and CEO Matt Rose.
