BNSF, NS to offer guaranteed temperature-controlled freight service

On Nov. 18, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Norfolk Southern Railway announced plans to introduce a coast-to-coast guaranteed carload service for temperature-controlled commodities moving from selected Pacific Northwest cities to the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast beginning Dec. 1.

Shippers would be able to purchase a "service assurance" for a $500 premium; BNSF and NS would reimburse shippers $1,000 for each load that didn't reach its destination on time.

"Consistency and speed are critical for shippers moving temperature-controlled commodities … and as we've continued to meet our on-time goals in these lanes, we simply felt it was time to offer shippers an
incentive to try rail," said Steve Branscum, BNSF group vice president, consumer products business unit, in a prepared statement.

Key origins include Seattle and Tacoma, Wash.; destinations include Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C.
