Last year, BNSF Railway Co. customers reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 21 million metric tons, equivalent to reducing emissions produced by more than 2 billion gallons of diesel, according to the Class I.

For the third-straight year, BNSF provided intermodal, automotive, industrial products and agricultural products customers with letters that describe their total rail carbon footprint and savings compared with moving the same freight via truck. Calculations are based on commodity type and weight, and distance traveled by rail. The calculations — which also analyze the different fuel efficiencies of trailers, containers or carloads — were developed in consultation with Clear Carbon Consulting, according to BNSF.
 
“BNSF can move a ton of freight 500 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel,” said John Lanigan, BNSF’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, in a prepared statement. “That is at least three times more efficient than an all-truck option, which helps reduce our dependence on imported oil while also reducing traffic on our nation’s crowded highways.”
