On March 28, LATINA Style magazine awarded Burlington Northern Santa Fe a 2002 LATINA Style 50 Award, recognizing the railroad as one of the 50 best U.S. companies for Latinas to work for.
To be considered for the award, BNSF completed an evaluation comparing the Class I with nearly 600 other surveyed companies on such criteria as building diversity awareness in the workplace, and meeting the needs and concerns of Latina professional working women.
In 2001, the railroad paid minority, women-owned and disadvantaged businesses more than $50 million through its Diverse Business Enterprise program, and awarded scholarships totaling $25,000 to 10 Hispanic students through the BNSF Foundation, according to the magazine's survey.
"This is a quite a tribute, one recognizing that BNSF values the significant contributions Latinas make to BNSF and that this is a great place for Latinas to develop and be successful," said Gloria Zamora, BNSF vice president of human resources and medical.
Through regional diversity councils and its Hispanic Leadership Council Affinity Group, BNSF aims to create a workplace that values and respects every individual, the railroad said. The Class I also promotes Cinco de Mayo and Hispanic Heritage Month.
