BNSF boots up carbon estimator tool

BNSF Railway Co. recently unveiled an online carbon estimator tool designed to help customers determine the real "carbon advantage" of shipping by rail vs. truck.
Accessible at www.bnsf.com, the calculator requires customers to input shipping data into the tool's graphical interface. They then receive a customized report comparing carbon emissions on the rail shipment vs. a truck move.
The tool bases its calculations on commodity group and type, distance, weight and unit volume, according to an item posted on the "BNSF News" Web site. It also allows users to modify truck performance assumptions for dray and long-haul considerations.
