This year, Burlington Northern Santa Fe closed 421 grade crossings — reaching its crossing-closure goal for the third straight year.
The railroad closed 635 crossings in 2000 and 515 in 2001. The 1,571 crossings BNSF closed during the past three years represents 4.7 percent of its system-wide crossings.
For 2003, the railroad has identified more than 560 crossing-closure candidates and established a goal of 420 closures.
"There's every reason to expect another success story in 2003," said Robert Boileau, BNSF assistant vice president, engineering services, in a prepared statement.
