On Dec. 16, Burlington Northern Santa Fe announced it added three lanes to its guaranteed carload service — from the Pacific Northwest to Arizona and Northern/Southern California, and Northern/Southern California to the Midwest.

BNSF now offers guaranteed on-time carload service in seven lanes: the Pacific Northwest to Arizona, Texas, the Midwest, and northern and southern California; northern California to the Midwest; and southern California to the Midwest.

The Class I has experienced similar growth with its guaranteed intermodal service, which BNSF launched in May 2000. Last week, the railroad moved the service's 10,000th load.

BNSF offers coast-to-coast guaranteed on-time intermodal service in 18 lanes for both expedited and premium shipments, including joint container and carload services with Norfolk Southern Railway.

As of Dec. 10, BNSF moved 10,081 guaranteed intermodal loads with an on-time performance record of 97 percent.

"Over the last two-and-a-half years, we have seen tremendous growth and interest in the program, and have been able to attract new shippers who have not traditionally shipped by rail," said John Lucas, BNSF assistant vice president of direct marketing, in a prepared statement.
