BNSF nearly halfway to year's crossing closure goal

So far this year, Burlington Northern Santa Fe has closed 182 grade crossings; by year end, the railroad plans to close 420 in all, its 2002 goal.
To accomplish that feat, BNSF's grade-crossing safety team and public-project managers weekly analyze crossings' status; the team so far has identified 740 closure candidates.
It takes BNSF about 60 days to close and remove private crossings; three to 12 months to close public crossings.
"With 182 under our belt, 50 pending and 80 under contract, our goal is getting closer," said Keith Jordan, BNSF grade-crossing database consultant, public projects, in a prepared statement.
