BNSF Railway Co. recently honored 86 shippers with Annual Product Stewardship Awards for safely transporting hazardous materials by rail in 2008.
The winners successfully implemented the ethics of product stewardship under the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care® initiative, BNSF said.
Implemented in 1997, the Product Stewardship Award recognizes shippers who transport a minimum of 500 loaded tank cars of hazardous materials during the previous year and record zero non-accidental releases. Last year, BNSF honored 74 shippers with the award.

Meanwhile, Union Pacific Railroad has won Toyota Logistics Services’ top railroad award for superior customer service in 2008. The award recognizes transportation providers that excel in equipment supply, communication, responsiveness, information supply and overall ease of doing business.
Last year, UP moved more than 700,000 Toyota vehicles. The Class I placed a concerted effort on responsiveness, standardization, problem solving and overall quality to earn the award, UP said.
