A safety campaign Burlington Northern Santa Fe began May 1 already is paying dividends. Between and May 1 and 21, BNSF reported 27 injuries, a 31 percent drop compared with 39 injuries during the same 2002 period, according to a prepared statement.

During the campaign (which concludes Sept. 7), field supervisors lead detailed job-safety briefings on several critical work activities, spending three weeks on each topic.

Supervisors receive briefing materials via email, including talking points for the first week, behavioral checklists for the second and quizzes for the third.

Between May 26 and June 1, the campaign will focus on "pinch points" for mechanical and engineering employees, and "fouling track" for transportation workers.
