To grow industrial product carloads and attract more transloading business in the greater Dallas area, Burlington Northern Santa Fe will expand Logistics Park-AllianceTexas®, its intermodal and automotive facility.

Today, the Class I announced plans to add 327 acres to the facility to provide direct rail access for customers who load their own rail cars.

"By adding this important component … we will be able to provide our customers with a full suite of transportation options — intermodal, transload, automotive and carload service with distribution and warehousing — in one location," said BNSF Vice President of Business Development Fritz Draper in a prepared statement.

Logistics Park was built by the former Santa Fe Railway as an automotive facility in 1990; BNSF expanded the park in 1994 to include an intermodal facility.

The expansion is part of a larger joint project between BNSF, Hillwood and M.T. Cole Trust under which the parties plan to develop 1,671 acres of land northeast of Logistics Park and offer sites with access to nearby Fort Worth Alliance Airport. The project is expected to attract 16 million square feet of industrial space.

Last month, the Class I announced plans to build BNSF Logistics Center-Fontana, a 38-acre transload facility west of San Bernardino, Calif. BNSF officials are considering whether to construct transload and direct-rail facilities in other areas, such as the Pacific Northwest, Houston and Kansas City, Mo.
