BNSF to help move historic box car to new California home

advertisement

BNSF Railway Co. is helping to relocate a former French-owned World War I box car in Fresno, Calif. The Class I and a local American Legion post plan to move the vintage car from a Fresno park — the car's home since 1957 — to the legion's headquarters.

BNSF is supplying necessary track materials, including two 20-foot rails, 11 ties, and 50 spikes and tie plates. Several of the railroad's Fresno-based employees have volunteered to help move the car and install track.

During the war, the car carried men and horses (a marking states the car's capacity was 40 men or eight horses). In 1949, French officials presented the car to the United States in appreciation of American efforts to supply France food and clothing in 1948.
