BNSF to reduce rates for Montana grain shippers

BNSF Railway Co. will lower the rates it charges to move Montana-produced grain, Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer announced yesterday. Producers would pay about 4 cents less per bushel to ship grain to West Coast markets, saving a total of $6 million annually.

Early next year, BNSF also plans to reduce grain rates for producers in Minnesota, and North and South Dakota. The Class I is adjusting prices because it recently announced plans to calculate fuel surcharges based on mileage instead of rates.

The new surcharges could save Montana producers $115 to $150 per rail car, Schweitzer said in a prepared statement. BNSF moves about 80 percent of the state’s export grain.
