BNSF to study Kansas town as potential site for third logistics park

Coming soon: logistics park No. 3. BNSF Railway Co. is conducting a feasibility study to determine if the Gardner, Kan., area would be a suitable site for the Class I’s third logistics park. BNSF currently operates parks — which include intermodal hubs, freight distribution and warehousing centers, and motor vehicle distribution facilities — near Fort Worth, Texas, and Chicago.

The study will analyze options for funding public infrastructure improvements, identify potential third-party development partners, recommend a facility design and determine whether BNSF would obtain an acceptable return on its capital investment. BNSF expects to complete the study by mid-summer.

Logistics parks are a “more intelligent freight development concept that harnesses the strengths of trucks and rail even more efficiently than an intermodal hub center alone,” said BNSF Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Matt Rose in a prepared statement.
