BNSF uses Internet to prompt dialogue on nation's supply chain issues

BNSF Railway Co. has launched a collaborative online forum designed to encourage discussion and forge a better understanding of U.S. infrastructure and supply chain issues.

The Supply Chain Forum features a video outlining the benefits of a strong supply chain, how the chain works, and the challenges the nation faces to maintain and bolster its supply chain advantages.

Because of the size of the nation’s freight-rail, highway, water, pipeline and air infrastructure, the United States long has held a competitive advantage over some of the world’s lowest supply chain costs (as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product) compared with Europe or China, according to BNSF.

But the U.S. Census Bureau projects the population will exceed 370 million by 2030, and with supply chain capacity largely filled, the growing populace will strain available infrastructure, BNSF officials said in a prepared statement.

“It is our hope that this online forum will increase the focus and the dialogue on the nation’s supply chain challenges and the public policy solutions to those challenges,” said John Ambler, BNSF vice president of corporate relations.
