Yesterday, the Association of American Railroads named BNSF Railway Co. Maintenance-of-Way Safety Assistant and 34-year railroading veteran Robert Coronado winner of the 2005 Harold F. Hammond Award.

Established in 1986, the award — which recognizes an individual railroad employee for outstanding safety achievement — is named after the late Harold F. Hammond, who served as president of the Transportation Association of America and chairman of the E.H. Harriman Memorial Safety Awards selection committee.

Coronado spearheads all engineering training in southern California. MOW workers in his territory — BNSF’s busiest, averaging more than 100 trains daily — reported only one injury last year and none so far in 2006.

Coronado also developed an on-track safety training module used across BNSF’s entire network and helped create a track awareness training video. In addition, he provides American Red Cross CPR and first aid training in the San Bernardino, Calif., area.

The AAR also presented certificates of commendation to:
• Paul Servansky, an Amtrak track inspector;
• Dale Bobby, a Canadian Pacific Railway track inspector;
• James Jorgensen Jr., a Conrail industrial car inspector;
• Jerome Sydnor, a CSX Transportation machinist;
• Raul Martinez, a Kansas City Southern engineer;
• Duane Parker, a Montana Rail Link locomotive engineer;
• R. Floyd Morton, a Norfolk Southern Railway flagging foreman; and
• David Gilbert, a Union Pacific Railroad machinist.
