BNSF Railway Co.’s Willow Springs, Ill., intermodal terminal had a banner 2005. The facility set an annual record of 770,007 lifts, up 6.3 percent compared with 2004, and posted a safety ratio of 1.03 incidents per 50,000 lifts, besting the terminal’s goal of a 1.12 ratio by 20 percent.

“The facility is required to have one safety meeting and one audit per month, but the safety team has a meeting and an audit each week to heighten safety awareness,” said Mike Utterback, senior hub manager at Willow Springs, in a prepared statement.

The terminal — which set a monthly record of 71,606 lifts in October — is the largest United Parcel Service rail-handling facility in the United States and the Class I’s second-largest intermodal facility, according to BNSF. The railroad’s largest intermodal terminal is located in Los Angeles.
