As of Dec. 12, train, yard and engine employees serving Burlington Northern Santa Fe's Omaha, Neb., terminal, had worked the entire year without reporting a single injury, according to a prepared statement. The 75 workers reported six injuries in 2001.


"Teamwork, communication and recognizing and correcting both environmental and behavioral risks have been instrumental in accomplishing this milestone," said Boyd Andrew, BNSF general manager, Nebraska Division.


The workers also increased awareness and adopted a safety-first attitude, said Terminal Manager Bill Thompson: "The employees and unions really got behind the effort and it made a difference."


In 2003, the workers plan to maintain the same safety focus at the terminal, which services about 500 cars daily and serves as an interchange point.
