The Transportation Services Index (TSI) in February reached 111.8, up 0.3 percent from January’s level and 3.3 percent from February 2011’s mark, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The index has risen 1.9 percent in the past five years and 14.8 percent in the past 10 years.
February’s Freight TSI of 110.3 inched up 0.5 percent from January’s level and rose 3.6 percent on a year-over-year basis. Shipments measured by the index reached the second-highest level since April 2008, trailing only December 2011, when shipments attained the highest mark in the Freight TSI's 22-year history, BTS officials said in a prepared statement.
February’s Passenger TSI of 116.1 declined 0.3 percent from January’s level, but climbed 2.5 percent from February 2011’s mark. The seasonally adjusted index includes data from air, local transit and intercity rail providers.
