U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) Sept. 16 launched TranStats, a Web site designed to reduce transportation researchers' and analysts' data-gathering time by providing access to more than 100 transportation-related databases.

The site (www.transtats.bts.gov) would enable users to explore intermodal data by mode or subject area, conduct keyword searches to find relevant data and receive online assistance.

"TranStats should result in more timely and more informed decisions, and a better transportation system," said BTS Director Ashish Sen in a prepared statement.

TranStats offers:

• a searchable index of more than 100 transportation-related databases from every mode, including social and demographic data commonly used in transportation analysis;

• a selective download feature that enables users to choose variables and directly download data into a personal computer using any database, spreadsheet or statistical package;

• an online data documentation function that provides profiles on each database;

• interactive analytical tools that enable users to complete statistical summaries, create time series or cross tabulations, generate online graphics, and cut and paste results into reports; and

• an interactive mapping feature that enables users to visualize geographic data and obtain atlas data.
