A majority of Bay Area residents believe a regional agency should be created to operate public transit, according to results from the 2004 Bay Area Poll released by the Bay Area Council.

Of the 600 residents surveyed in the nine-county area in November, 63 percent said they want one regional authority to oversee the area’s public transit system instead of having more than 30 individual transit agencies.

Eighty-five percent of the respondents said they support Proposition 42 — a measure passed in 2002 that dedicates gasoline sales taxes to transportation — but oppose the state’s decision to use the funds to balance its budget.

A majority of the respondents also want a regional agency to manage the area’s commercial airports, and make decisions on expanding freeways and highways.
