Last week, the San Francisco bay area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) announced that an additional $122 million in federal and state funds will be allocated for area transportation projects in fiscal-year 2005.

The funds — $107 million of which will come from the federal Surface Transportation, and Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement programs — will enable MTC to begin implementing its recently adopted Transportation 2030 Plan.

Bay Area Rapid Transit, Caltrain, San Francisco Muni and Golden Gate Transit will receive a total of $22.5 million for rehabilitation projects, and $6.9 million for system management and safety projects.

The commission also has proposed spending $15 million to implement a Lifeline Transportation Program, which will improve mobility options for low-income passengers.

MTC oversees transportation planning, coordinating and financing for nine bay-area counties.
