Birth of Niagara Falls entertainment complex determines fate of downtown tracks

As Niagara Falls, Ontario, gains a casino complex, it'll lose freight railroad tracks running through the heart of the city.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLGC) and city of Niagara Falls recently reached an agreement with Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Railway to purchase a downtown rail line and relocate freight train operations outside Niagara Falls' core.
OLGC would contribute $15 million; the city, $12.5 million; and Falls Management Co., $7.5 million, toward removing the tracks.
Hyatt Development Corp. Oct. 22 began building a 368-room hotel and casino complex on the site of the Niagara Falls Casino/Gateway Project, a plan to transform the city into a year-round tourist attraction.
The gateway project would include meeting and exhibition space, a performing arts center, health club and visitor's center within the hotel/casino; a people mover; and a nearby theme park and 12,000-square-foot ampitheater.
The people mover is designed to serve as a transportation link for more than 5 million projected annual passengers, accessing the gateway project and other nearby attractions.
