Yesterday, Joseph Boardman officially dropped the word “acting” from his title as Federal Railroad Administrator. Nominated for the position by President Bush in March, Boardman was confirmed as FRA head by the Senate in late April and began serving as acting administrator. He succeeded former acting administrator Robert Jamison.

Since 1997, Boardman had served as commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation. He previously served as chairman of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' Standing Committee on Rail, and chief operating officer of Progressive Transportation Services Inc.

“[Boardman’s] years of experience as a state transportation leader who knows railroads will be of great service to this administration as we seek to improve railroad safety and ensure the success of intercity passenger rail,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta in a prepared statement.
