Bombardier receives $76 million locomotive contract from Swiss railway
advertisement
Swiss Federal Railways recently awarded a $76 million contract to Bombardier Transportation to manufacture 18 multi-system locomotives.
Designed to adapt to AC and DC networks, the locomotives will be used to move freight between Switzerland and Italy.
A version of Bombardier’s class 185 model, the locomotives would be equipped with electronics used on the 15kV AC network in Switzerland and the 3 kV DC network in Italy, and both countries’ train control systems.
Reaching speeds of 86 mph, the locomotives are expected to integrate easily into the railway's existing fleet, according to a prepared statement.
The locomotives will be manufactured in Kassel, Germany, before Bombardier commissions them in Switzerland. Delivery is scheduled between October 2004 and March 2005.
