Bombardier Transportation recently obtained a contract from China’s Dalian Locomotives and Rolling Stock Co. Ltd. to supply 500 electric freight locomotives to the Chinese Ministry of Railways. Bombardier’s share of the $1.4 billion contract is $480 million.

Designed to reach a top speed of 74 mph, the locomotives will be based on Bombardier’s Kiruna model. Bombardier will provide technical design and support, and MITRAC™ propulsion and control equipment.

The first series of propulsion and control equipment will be produced at Bombardier’s European plants. Production later will be shared by Bombardier’s Chinese joint venture, Bombardier CPC Propulsion Systems Co. Ltd., and Dalian Locomotives. Delivery will begin in 2009 and conclude in 2011.
