Bombardier to install CuproBraze oil coolers on refurbished South African Railway locomotives

advertisement

Bombardier Transportation will use CuproBraze® heat exchangers on 45 locomotives the company is overhauling for South African Railways, according to the International Copper Association.

Bombardier’s contract includes upgrading the oil coolers for the electric converter and transformer, which provide power to the locomotive engine. The original coolers were exposed to dust along the railways’s 250-mile route, which led to increased temperatures in the electrical equipment and, ultimately, premature failure of the rectifier, transformer and oil cooler. The CuproBraze copper-brass brazed oil cooler is designed to withstand elevated temperatures, according to a prepared statement.
