Swedish transport and logistics company Green Cargo recently awarded a $153 million to Bombardier Transportation to modernize 62 diesel and 42 electric locomotives. The contract is the largest-ever vehicle modernization contract to be awarded in Sweden, according to a prepared statement.

The overhaul is expected to extend the locomotives’ lives by 15 years. Bombardier will make improvements to the cab, as well as upgrades designed to reduce energy consumption and provide multiple-unit operations so workers can connect the electric and diesel locomotives.

Bombardier expects to deliver prototypes in late 2008 and ship the remaining units during the next six years.
