Breske to become Wisconsin's railroad commissioner

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle recently appointed State Sen. Roger Breske commissioner of railroads to succeed long-time Commissioner Rodney Kreunen. Breske's term begins June 4 and expires on March 1, 2011.
First elected to Wisconsin's senate in 1990, Breske currently serves as chairman of the Senate Committee on Transportation and Tourism. He also is vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Utilities and Rail, and serves on the governor's highway safety and tourism councils.
"With his experience as the chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation, [Breske] will continue to serve the residents of Wisconsin well by ensuring the safety of the railroads in this state," said Doyle in a prepared statement.
Created in 1993 and funded by assessments on railroads, the Office of the Commissioner of Railroads is responsible for safety at Wisconsin's more than 4,255 public grade crossings. The commissioner is appointed to a six-year term. Kreunen, who was appointed commissioner in 1996, continued to serve even though his term expired in 2005.
