A short-line association and producers of National Public Television's nationally-syndicated "Tracks Ahead" program plan to promote large and small railroads' contributions to the U.S. economy, and public policies' effects on railroads' ability to grow, according to a statement prepared July 22.

To do so, Tracks Ahead is offering to produce a seven- to nine-minute segment highlighting a service, facility or general educational theme about railroad's value to America for any railroad or rail supplier willing to sponsor such a segment for a future 30-minute show.

Railroads haven't been able to get their story out to the American public, which would help prompt elected and appointed officials to exert more influence on and understand the importance of funding rail services, said John Gohmann, chairman and president of 121-mile short line Minnesota Commercial Railway, and president of Small Railroad Business Owners of America, a recently formed association that's collaborating with Tracks Ahead on the segment-sponsorship initiative.
