Buffalo & Pittsburgh to unveil low-emission locomotive

On Monday, the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad (BPR) plans to commission a new “ultra-low-emission” GenSet locomotive.
Built through a public-private partnership between BPR, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Transportation and Brookville Equipment Corp., the GenSet features two smaller, computer-controlled diesel engines instead of a single large engine. By starting the second engine only when needed, the GenSet “significantly reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions,” BPR officials said in a commissioning ceremony announcement.
