President Bush recently announced his intention to nominate Robert Sumwalt III as National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) vice chairman.

If confirmed by the Senate, Sumwalt would complete a term expiring Dec. 31, then serve a full five-year NTSB term expiring Dec. 31, 2011.

A former aviation accident investigator and commercial airline pilot, Sumwalt currently serves as manager of aviation for energy firm SCANA. In 2000, he co-authored a book on aircraft accident investigations.
