Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) March 30 ratified three separate three-year agreements with Canadian National Railway Co.
The agreements, retroactive to Jan. 1, provide wage increases and pay adjustments for certain classifications, several benefit improvements and higher productivity provisions.
CN March 5 averted a planned March 7 CAW strike by reaching a tentative agreement with the union.
CAW’s 5,000 CN members work as shopcraft employees, customer service representatives, intermodal yard workers, clerks and owner-operator truckers.
In its current round of labor negotiations, CN has reached agreements with Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Canadian National Railways Police Association. The railroad continues to bargain with Canadian Council of Railway Operating Unions and Rail Canada Traffic Controllers.
On March 29, CAW also reached a tentative three-year agreement with Canadian Pacific Railway, which would include a one-year extension.
The pact would improve wages, benefits and pensions, and contain provisions to improve productivity through various work rule changes.
The settlement is subject to ratification by CAW’s 2,900 CPR members — mostly shopcraft employees — a process expected to be completed within three weeks.
