Canadian National Railway Co. and United Transportation Union Dec. 14 reached a tentative collective agreement.
About 90 percent of CN's 4,500 UTU-represented workers voted to strike CN Nov. 23, although negotiations continued between the organizations.
CN's and UTU's latest three-year agreement expired in December 2000, and the railroad's union-represented conductors and yard workers were seeking retroactive pay and a compliance incentive clause designed to set fines if CN's management violates an agreement. Details of the tentative agreement weren't disclosed.
UTU officials plan to send ratification ballots to members as soon as possible, with a vote tally expected in early 2002.
Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers officials recently asked UTU to jointly dissolve Canadian Council of Railway Operating Unions (CCROU) — which negotiates on behalf of CN's BLE- and UTU-represented workers — leaving each union to bargain separately with CN, UTU officials said in a prepared statement.
CN May 15 had reached a tentative three-year collective agreement with CCROU, at the time stating that each union recommended ratification to its members.
