CN acquires 53-foot containers to cook up refrigerated-food business

Canadian National Railway Co. July 18 announced it recently purchased 150 state-of-the-art refrigerated containers with an option to buy 150 more.

The 53-foot containers have 8 percent more cubic space and weigh 9 percent less than the 48-foot containers CN plans to replace.

CN moves the bulk of its grocery business on expedited intermodal trains — which can cut transcontinental transit times 24 hours and compete with long-haul team-driver trucks — between central Canada and western provinces.

"This reefer purchase underscores CN's continuing commitment to provide high-quality transportation to the service-sensitive grocery trade," said William Berry, CN vice president of intermodal, in a prepared statement, adding that the containers will enable CN to compete for lucrative backhaul moves of frozen meats, poultry and french fries produced in western Canada and destined for Eastern markets.
