CN’s online greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions calculator is a slightly more accurate estimator of a shipment’s carbon footprint. Yesterday, the Class I unveiled an upgraded calculator designed to better estimate total carbon emissions of shipments across multiple modes.

Accessible at http://www.cn.ca/ghg_calculator, the Web-based tool estimates carbon emissions for moves involving a combination of rail, truck and vessel, or domestic intermodal shipments.

“Our enhanced GHG calculator is perfectly aligned with our transport products, giving manufacturers, importers, exporters, shippers, wholesalers or retailers a full understanding of the carbon footprint of shipments using single or multiple modes of transportation,” said Normand Pellerin, CN’s assistant vice president-environment, in a prepared statement.

CN also announced it reached a voluntary mitigation agreement with the village of Park Forest, Ill., that addresses the municipality’s environmental concerns about the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway Co, (EJ&E) integration. The Class I agreed to provide funding for a range of measures, including traffic improvements, rail noise mitigation, quiet zones and fencing.

CN now has hammered out mitigation agreements with 19 municipalities, more than half the cities and villages located along the EJ&E’s lines in Illinois and Indiana.
