CN recently landed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America for the second year in a row. CN is the only railroad among three large North American industrial transportation companies named to the index for 2010-11, according to the Class I.

Launched in 1999, the DJSI includes sustainability leaders from each industry on a global and regional level. Based on an analysis of economic, environmental and social performance, the index assesses issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply-chain standards and labor practices.

CN helps its customers make “informed, sustainable transportation choices” that include rail, intermodal, truck and vessel modes, and warehousing and distribution services, CN officials said in a prepared statement. The Class I’s greenhouse-gas calculator enables manufacturers, importers, exporters, wholesalers and retailers to assess the carbon impact of their shipments using single or multiple transportation modes.

“CN knows the long-term success of the company will reflect sustainable practices,” said CN President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau. “As a team, we are committed to running a safe, efficient railway, working to minimize our environmental impact and the carbon footprint of our customers, and investing in our employees and the communities along our rail network.”
